Biographical/Historical Note
Patricia Shaia Raad's grandparents immigrated from Lebanon to the United States. Her father, William Harry Shaia, was born in New York and worked as a physician. Her mother, Beth Shaia, was born and raised in Gaffney, South Carolina. Beth began the Catholic Social Services in Charlotte, North Carolina in order to assist in community aid. Patricia, their daughter, earned an MA in Education and became a teacher.
George Raad’s mother was also a child of Lebanese immigrants. His father immigrated to the United States at age 14. George’s paternal grandfather had planned to move his whole family from Lebanon to the United States; however, he only managed to bring his two eldest sons before the advent of the Great Depression. The family never reunited. George became a physician and met Patricia at a hafli festival. The couple, drawn together by their shared cultural and religious heritage, married and had three children, George Jr., Anthony, and Alice.
